A summer evening in Clayton, from rooftops and city streets to martinis at Frida’s.

From the first conversation with Tracey and Nick, their dynamic was easy to pick up on. Somewhere between Forest Park wedding plans, colorful florals, and a passport crisis before Jamaica, their personalities came through. Tracey brings the energy, Nick has a way of keeping things calm, and they balance each other incredibly well.

When we started tossing around ideas for their engagement session, Clayton felt like the right fit. They were drawn to something dressed up and city-focused with an editorial edge, so we planned an evening around the architecture, streets, and changing light, then saved Frida’s for the last stop.

01 / ABOVE CLAYTON

Starting at the top.

Tracey showed up in a white mini and heels, Nick in a navy suit, and the rooftop gave them a clean backdrop to start the evening. A little direction was all they needed before their own rhythm took over.

She’s expressive and quick to laugh. He’s calm, quietly funny, and knows exactly how to get a reaction out of her. There’s plenty of affection between them, with just enough teasing to keep things interesting.

02 / STREET LEVEL

Down to the streets.

From the rooftop, we headed down as the evening light started cutting between the buildings. Crosswalks, long shadows, glass, and clean architecture gave Tracey and Nick plenty to move through without losing the city feel they wanted.

We had a route in mind, but there was room to let things breathe along the way. A little direction when they needed it, then space for Tracey and Nick to walk, talk, and fall back into the way they naturally are together.

Some of my favorite frames came from everything happening between one spot and the next.

03 / LAST STOP

Martinis at Frida’s.

We ended the evening at Frida’s, the same place where I first sat down with Tracey and Nick to talk about their wedding. Coming back months later felt like a fitting little callback, except this time the planning conversation had turned into an evening of their own, with martinis on the table and their wedding getting closer.

Inside, we shifted gears. The dark walls, little lamps, patterned carpet, and glassware gave us a moodier setting, so I brought out the direct flash and leaned into more artful direction. Tracey and Nick gave me plenty to work with: affection, quick laughs, and a little teasing. Turns out, they look especially good with martinis and direct flash.

NEXT UP / THE WEDDING

What comes next.

When Tracey first reached out, she talked about wanting photographs they could put in their home and cherish for the rest of their lives. There’s something I love about knowing a photograph won’t just be looked at once and tucked away. It becomes part of the home you build together, something you pass every day without thinking much about it, until one day you realize how much life has happened since it was taken.

Their Clayton engagement photos will always belong to this particular version of Tracey and Nick: dressed up, just the two of them, with their wedding still ahead. Next time, they’ll be surrounded by the people who have known them through different versions of their lives and will be there as they begin the next one together. Years from now, their walls will hold pieces with all of it. I can’t wait to find out which ones.
